EVENT: The Mad Mike Summer Bash

8th December 2016

HAMPTON DOWNS & MAZDA PRESENT MAD MIKE’S SUMMER BASH

Hampton Downs, Mazda and New Zealand drift superstar ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett have joined forces to bring you the biggest drift event of 2017 – Mad Mike’s Summer Bash, where Mad Mike & RADBUL will take on NZ’s best!

A 16 strong field of NZ’s best drifters has been confirmed for the headline Summer Bash Shootout event, where all comers will go up against Mad Mike in a new exciting racing format. The field includes former New Zealand champions ‘Fanga’ Dan Woolhouse, Gaz Whiter and Darren Kelly as well as the current champ Curt Whittaker. Rounding out the field are Daynom Templeman, Nico Reid, Bruce Tannock, Cole Armstrong, Drew Donovan, Jodie Verhulst, Sky Zhao, Andrew Redward, Adam Hedges, Troy Jenkins and Brad Smith.

Mad Mike has spent much of 2016 traveling the globe showcasing his skills so he’s looking forward to bringing it all back home in 2017, starting with this brand new Hampton Downs promoted drift event.

“It will be New Zealand’s biggest one day drifting festival and it will have something for everyone, from the grassroots of the sport to the pros,” says Whiddett. “The Summer Bash is an opportunity for drifters to showcase their skills in front of a big crowd at New Zealand’s best drift circuit.”

Tony Quinn, the owner of Hampton Downs, is looking forward to seeing drift cars strut their stuff on the new seven corner international drift circuit, including the two corner stretch Quinn has nicknamed ‘Double Bastard’, where the new 1.2km track extension meets the old track.

One of the stars of the show will be Whiddett’s RADBUL, a 1200hp, 4 rotor, twin-turbo Mazda MX5. Whiddett finished third in this year’s Formula DRIFT World Championship in RADBUL and it will be the first opportunity for drift fans to see it on the track in New Zealand.

“Usually you show up at a drift event, you do a few practice laps and then you’re straight into elimination,” explains Whiddett. “If you’re knocked out, then you’re done for the day. We’re looking to give the drivers a lot more track time. As well as the Summer Bash Shootout we’ve got lots of other cool events happening.”

The Triple Threat Team Drift is open to crews of three with free rein to navigate the judged section in their own style.

“We’re looking for those three cars syncing on the track,” says Whiddett, “but we’re also looking for something explosive. It might be one car drifts wide and the other two pass them on the inside. Or they might all do flying 360’s across the finish line. It’s a chance to get creative and put on a real spectacle for the fans.”

The Double Bastard Drift Challenge is open to all comers and it’s the first time that the Hampton Downs new International Circuit will be open to drift cars. This will be one of the feature events, as drivers of all levels go up against the stars where they will be judges on the two cornered ‘Double Bastard’ and awarded for their insane entry and commitment throughout the section.

Open Drift on Club & National Circuits where the pro drivers get sideways with the grass roots up n comers as they test both man and machine.

The International Cruise You don’t have to drive sideways to experience the thrill of driving on the racetrack. The International Track Cruise is a rare opportunity for anyone to have a drive around the track, in a controlled manner of course.

“Mum or Dad can put the kids in the family wagon and feel what it’s like to do a couple of laps around a racetrack,” explains Whiddett. “That isn’t something that you get to do at many other events that I know of.”

The Time Attack “Unlimited Outlaws” challenge will see some of the top Superlap drivers in the country attempt to set a new lap record around Hampton Downs.

Major prize pool There will be lots of prizes for the winners plus anyone who pre-purchases a ticket to the Summer Bash goes in the draw to win a hot lap with ‘Mad Mike’ in his RADBUL.

Off the track there will be a hard park Show ‘n Shine for people to display their cars and ‘Mad Mike’ will be wandering around picking his favourite cars. There will be a Family Fun Zone, VIP Trackside Lounge, including a private lunch with ‘Mad Mike’ and New Zealand’s top drift stars, a new viewing platform and grandstands so the fans can get up close to the action.

It promises to be one of the best drift events on the best drift track in the country.

Mad Mike Throws It Down In Seattle

30th July 2015

Mad Mike proves he has the skills, the team & the machine to be a threat in the Formula Drift

Mad Mike Whiddett shook off a tough start to the fifth round of the Formula Drift Pro championship held in Seattle, Washington, over the weekend, to prove he has the skills, the team and the machine to be a serious threat to the seasoned competition.

Despite a five-year hiatus from the US series, the Kiwi driver has quickly found his groove and posted respectable results in his first two Formula Drift rounds this season. It’s something made more impressive by the fact that Whiddett is competing in a brand new car.

RADBUL has exceeded our expectations. Formula Drift is the toughest drift competition in the world, so to place in the top 10 in our first two competitions this season – we couldn’t be any happier. The team has been doing lots of little things to the car in between my events, and I have really benefited from my crew chief Scott Dodgion’s experience and input. Overall, RADBUL is amazing and so much more than what I was expecting when drawing and writing down the parts list to build my ultimate dream drift machine. I'm still coming to grips with the chassis’ speed and response – it's frighteningly fast, but killer fun!

The ‘Throwdown’ round of the Formula Drift championship is not only an important one for drivers contesting the entire seven-round Pro series, but also one of the most exciting, with a long, high-speed banked section running into a tight and technical series of left and right-hand turns. It requires total commitment and precision, and headed into the event Whiddett was excited at the prospect of competing at Evergreen Speedway.

Seattle is one of my favourite tracks of the series, but like the other rounds, the biggest challenge will be learning the car quickly and finding a comfortable setup so we can be as competitive as possible. The other challenge, of course, is nature. If the rain sets in, we’ll have to do our best to adapt to the

If the weather forecast promised anything for the event, it was to expect the unexpected. Whiddett looked strong in the dry practice, but by the time qualifying rolled around on Friday afternoon, the sky had clouded over and the rain was coming down.

With 1,200 horsepower to tame, a clean pass was never going to easy, but Whiddett kept his composure and put some points on the board with only a slight wheel-off-course error to speak of. The second run, however, didn’t go to plan at all. Faced with a half-dried track, competitors struggled to maintain grip, and when Whiddett tried to hold close proximity to the wall, the bank bit back – hard. The impact tore the tyre off RADBUL’s left-rear wheel, resulting in an incomplete run and leaving Whiddett to rely on his first pass to secure him a spot in the next day’s battles.

Starting from 27th put the pressure on, but the team faced an even bigger challenge on Saturday afternoon when RADBUL’s Winters Performance Quick Change differential blew. An unexpected setback, all hands on the job ensured that a replacement was fitted – if only with a few moments to spare. With no time or opportunity to test the setup, Whiddett put all his trust in the fix and lined up against Hawaiian-born Forrest Wang in the Top 32.

The Nissan Silvia driver led first, but from the moment Whiddett initiated on the bank RADBUL looked unbalanced, and diving in tight resulted in a spin and a zero score. With an advantage to Wang, there was only one thing for the Kiwi driver to do on his lead lap: charge hard. And that he did, the MX-5 pulling a huge gap on the Silvia. Wang was hit with a zero for an ‘inactive chase’ and suddenly it was all tied up. The judges called a One More Time re-run, but that too ended up being too close to call, and the pair lined up for third time. Confidence restored, Whiddett was fast and focussed, pushing through to the next round after Wang succumbed to the pressure and spun.

Whiddett’s Top 16 battle was one he’s been looking forward to for a long time, but taking down former Formula Drift champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. was never going to be an easy task. Again, RADBUL seemed twitchy as Gittin Jr.’s Ford Mustang RTR led on the first pass, but Whiddett appeared to overcome whatever handling issues the car had by simply piling on more speed. That was something even more obvious in his lead lap, and had Whiddett not slightly straightened up at the end of the judged section, the outcome might have been different than it was – a win to the American. When that result was announced though, it was obvious who had won the crowd’s respect.

The Formula Drift Pro championship now moves to Texas for the ‘Showdown’ round on August 21-22, ahead of October’s ‘Final Fight’ at Irwindale Speedway in California.

A new venue in the Formula Drift Championship is always bound to shake things up, but when you throw torrential rain into the mix it gets a whole lot more interesting. ‘Uncharted Territory’, the third stop on the 2015 FD calendar held at Orlando Speedworld Oval Track just proved that.

Mad Mikes Return To Formula Drift - by Larry Chen

8th May 2015

Larry Chen of Speedhunters interviewed Mad Mike about his return to Formula Drift and his debut in RADBUL.

I was very excited when Mike told me at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon that he was making a return to Formula Drift, because not only is he a fan favorite, he brings a sense of style unlike anyone else on the grid.

I had a moment to catch up with Mike as soon as he was finished with Thursday practice ahead of this weekend’s FD Atlanta round.

Larry: You just finished open practice – how is your return to Formula Drift going so far?

Mike: It’s insane – seeing the speed of all the cars especially! Just watching from the outside, you can definitely see the progression. I’ve been away from Formula Drift USA for five years, and the difference in speed from back then until now is ridiculous. Today is our first time running on a new Nitto Tire NT05 compound, and it feels amazing.

Scott from SPD, who used to be Daijiro Yoshihara’s crew chief, has done a lot with setting up our KW coilovers and the rest of the suspension, so we’re really comfortable with the car now.  It helped that we took a lot of grip out of the car this morning, but since then we’ve just been fine tuning the setup and I’ve been getting used to the track with this layout, as I haven’t driven it before.

Project RADBUL MX5 Part 5

18th February 2015

As we’ve seen in previous updates on Project RADBUL – including the last one from early December 2014 when it's engine was being pieced together – not only is everything about this build unconventional, the shock value has been wound right off the scale.

Despite being a motorsport category where rulebooks allow a certain amount of engineering freedoms, there’s almost a tried and tested formula when it comes to engineering competitive pro car. I can tell you that a short wheelbase Mazda MX-5 with a 4-rotor, twin turbo engine good for four digit power output is definitely not it though.

But would you expect anything from Mad Mike? We certainly didn’t… Read the full Speedhunters Blog here
